  1. hard to recount the story and make sound at all appealing because in many ways the plot is very mundane. However, the insights are amazing and quite disturbing especially for a reader who is a similar age to the main character in the book. I have huge admiration for Julian Barnes’ writing. – makes every word count and ordinary sentences often leave you gobsmacked because they are both ordinary and utterly ‘right’. It takes real skill to do this. It’s a book that has you tracking back to the beginning when you have finished. Well recommended.
